Instructional Resources

These are resources that have helped me. There is no business affiliation.

  • Studio Basics Course by Heidi Willis, available through Udemy.  This is a great first course with a focus on water control, flat washes, graduated washes, multi-color washes, and the wet-in-wet technique. https://www.udemy.com/course/paint-realistic-watercolor-and-botanicals-studio-basics/

  • Lorraine Watry's YouTube channel and her website.  She offers numerous how-to lessons for beginners for free on her channel, and her workshops are available through her website.  https://www.lorrainewatrystudio.com

  • Shelley Prior's YouTube channel.  She has over 30 years of experience, and offers weekly painting demos for free that you can do along with her or just watch.

  • Stan Miller's YouTube channel.  He offers several free lessons with a focus on capturing the value (how light or dark an object is).

  • Paint Tube TV https://digital.painttube.tv/shop  Great video lessons from master artists

  • https://www.handprint.com  This a great website for color theory and pigment information.

  • Workshops:  So far, I have focussed on sharing either free or low-cost resources to help you get started. Once you feel ready, I strongly encourage you to explore master arts who have achieved signature status with the American Watercolor Society and/or the National Watercolor Society.  Find several that you really like, visit their websites, and try to take a workshop from them. Many now offer online workshops as well as in-person. https://www.americanwatercolorsociety.org and https://www.nationalwatercolorsociety.org

  • Transferring a Drawing to Watercolor Paper

                https://www.dragonflyspiritstudio.com/three-ways-to-transfer-drawings-to-watercolor-paper/

  • Drawing Resources

"You Can Draw in 30 Days" by Mark Kistler - good first resource

"Pen & Ink Drawing Workbook" by Alphonso Dunn

"Pen & Ink Drawing, A Simple Guide" by Alphonso Dunn

Grid method of drawing:  A grid of 1" squares is drawn onto a photo (or applied electronically using one of many drawing grid apps.  This breaks an image that you wish to draw into smaller, more manageable sections.  You can then draw, one square at a time, onto paper that also has the same number of squares.  This technique is also useful for enlarging or shrinking the size of an image.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=088v4hXE4xs

  • A few of my favorite watercolor artists:  Anne Abgott, Jennifer Annesley, Phil Babb, Dan Burt, Lana Cease, Ratindra Das, Kelly Eddington, Andy Evansen, Vicente Garcia Fuentes, Paul Jackson, Direk Kingnok, Chris Krupinski, John Lovett, James Maria, Angus McEwan, Dean Mitchell, Stan Miller, Barbara Nechis, Ted Nuttall, Lana Privitera, Stephen Quiller, John Salminen, John Singer Sargent, Tim Saternow, Billy Showell, Dianne Sutherland, Keiko Tanabe, Abe Toshiyuki, Brittney Tough, Carrie Waller, Soon Y.
